Depart from Arusha at around 0830am and drive via Mto wa mbu andEngaruka village to Lake Natron crossing the Manyara escarpments.Visit the Maasai village at Selela and the Engaruka ruins. Though youmay see game in the area, particularly in the wet season, this placeis not so much about game viewing as experiencing the awe-inspiringspace and immense views. Breakfast at around 0700am. Spend all of day three exploring the riverand waterfalls near the campsite of Lake Natron. Trek across themineral lake observing the many birds that feed on the lake. Eat a hotlunch at the campsite and chat with the local Maasai. This area ishome to nomadic Maasai and it is really impressive to see how theymanage to conduct a lifestyle, unchanged for many hundreds of years,in such a harsh environment. Begin hiking at midnight, reaching the peak at dawn. View themolten lava in the volcano and descend the mountain to return to campfor a hot breakfast. Oldonyo Lengai means mountain of god in theMaasai language. Accord ng to Maasai tradition, god lives at the topof Oldonyo Lengai and the sound created by the magma is the voice ofgod. However, theyhave not mastered the art of dragging their kill high into thebranches, as the leopard is so adept at doing.Birdlife is fascinating at Lake Manyara and numbers are at their peakduring the rainy season when seed-eaters, insect-eaters and waterbirds thrive. DAY 1. • Drive to Mto Wa Mto and enter the Great Rift Valley, passing via Engaruaka basin and into a semi-desert Area hot wild and dusty with extinct volcanos Kitumbene and Gelai off to the right and the Mountain of God "Ol Doinyo Lengai" always in front.• Around midday we arrive at Falls Camp on the banks of the Engaresero river, a welcome place to shower or bathe in the river,or take a trek to the waterfalls hidden in the Western wall of the rift valley.• Rest and around mid night drive to and start the climb of Lengai (circa 4 hours climb) One should be able to see Lava glowing once at the peak.
