North East Tanzania (Northern Safari Circuit) is the richest wildlife safari area in the East Africa or probably in Africa. With varied geographical features like Kilimanjaro and Meru mountains, Lake Victoria and the Great Rift Valley which contains many large and ecologically significant wildlife parks and reserves, such as the famous Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara and Tarangire, offers an array of safari options, from mountain trekking and hiking, game viewing safari in the national parks, walking excursions and cultural/tribal tours to various villages. Famed Olduvai Gorge has provided rich evidence of the area's prehistory, including fossil remains of some of humanity's earliest ancestors. Almost all safaris in the Northern Parks involve going by road from Arusha with a private vehicle and driver-guide around the various parks, staying at a range of different lodges and campsites. The Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit can be visited year round, though the best times to visit are either side of the main peak seasons: late January, February, March, late May and June to see the migration especially in Serengeti and Ngorongoro; or in the dry season of September, October, November and early December, since animals are found near the water bodies, e.g. Tarangire River, Mara River, Lake Manyara and the crater floor lake. The best time to climb Kilimanjaro or Meru is September to early November during the dry season, when the sky is usually clear from clouds. Avoid rain season which starts March and ends in June, because the slopes are more slippery. However, the climbing can also be arranged for June and July A good safari should involve walking or hiking: Hiking in Ngorongoro Highlands (Olmoti Crater and Empakaai Crater) accompanied by Maasai Warriors; Lake Eyasi walking with Hadza hunters and gatherers’, otherwise long day trekking to Mount Makarot and Ol Doinyo Lengai; all these can be accommodated in the same itinerary Other safari interests in the north is balloon safari, which is operated over and above Serengeti National Park
